The Journey
A crossing of the High Atlas, an evening among the gorges, and a night where the road runs out and the sand begins.
Roughly 6 hours of driving
Morning. Your driver-guide collects you at 08:00 and the city gives way to the switchbacks of the Tizi n’Tichka pass, 2,260 metres up, the highest road in Morocco kept open all year.
Midday. A long stop at Aït Ben Haddou, the earthen citadel protected by UNESCO and familiar from half a century of cinema. Time to climb to the granary at the top and take in the valley below.
Afternoon and evening. Through Ouarzazate and the Rose Valley to the Dades Valley, arriving as the low sun sets the rock formations glowing. Dinner and the night at a boutique hotel.
Roughly 4 hours of driving
Morning. After breakfast, the road threads the Dades Gorge and then the Todra Gorge, where sheer cliff walls close in on either side of a ribbon of palms.
Afternoon. Onwards through Erfoud and Rissani, with an optional pause at a fossil atelier or the local souk, reaching Merzouga while the light is still high.
Evening. As the heat softens, you ride a camel into Erg Chebbi for sunset, then settle into your camp among the dunes: dinner in the main tent, drums by the fire, and a sky heavy with stars.
Roughly 9 hours of driving
Morning. Wake before the camp does, if you wish, and watch the dunes turn from grey to gold. After breakfast the return begins, retracing the south by a different rhythm.
Afternoon and evening. An optional visit to the Atlas Film Studios at Ouarzazate, a final crossing of the Tizi n’Tichka, and delivery to your Marrakech accommodation between 18:00 and 19:00.

Before You Reserve
Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most often.
For travellers with limited time, three days is the sweet spot. You cross the High Atlas, walk Aït Ben Haddou, follow the Dades and Todra valleys and still sleep a full night among the dunes. A fourth day slows the pace but adds no major sight you would otherwise miss.
Merzouga sits a good 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech, which is exactly why the route is split across two days on the way out, roughly 6 hours and then 4, broken constantly by viewpoints, villages and photo stops. Only the final day is a long drive, and it runs through scenery you will not tire of.
More than most guests expect. Your tent is private and ensuite, with real beds, a hot shower and its own bathroom rather than shared facilities. The wider camp is shared with a small number of other travellers, but your tent, vehicle and guide are exclusively yours.
Yes. The sunset ride into Erg Chebbi on the second evening is included, and it remains the moment most guests describe first when they write to us afterwards.
Absolutely. A private itinerary is the kindest format for families: rest stops multiply, timings shift and anything unsuitable is simply skipped. Tell us the ages when reserving and your driver-guide will plan the days around them.
Light layers for the day and something warm for the evening, since desert nights cool quickly in every season. Closed shoes for the dunes, a scarf or hat against sun and wind, sunscreen, and a power bank, as charging at the camp is limited. A swimsuit earns its place if your hotel has a pool.
Dinner and breakfast on both nights, at the Dades hotel and at the camp. Lunches are deliberately left open so you can choose where to stop along the road, guided by your driver’s recommendations.
Yes. The standard camp is already ensuite with hot water and proper beds, but a higher category with additional comforts can be arranged. Mention it when reserving and we will confirm availability for your dates.
