Day 3: Rabat → Chefchaouen

On our third day on the 12 days Morocco Tour, we go on a lovely ride to Chefchaouen, traveling through Knitra and El Ghareb provinces which are famous for their remarkable scenery. Along the way, our surroundings in Ouazzane start to change, presenting you with delightful views surrounded by cedar, oak and almond trees.

We ended up in Chefchaouen, a town set amid the Rif Mountains and well known as the Blue City. You’ll find stunning houses with blue and white walls and red tiles here, all influenced by the blend of Andalusian and Moroccan architecture, left by the founding refugees from the Reconquista. We will then stop at Outa el Hammam square, known for its busy market with many products and local women who serve refreshing sweets from their handmade fabrics and belts.

There is also the opportunity to taste the town’s famous goat’s cheese which comes from the country-side where goats freely graze. In the center of the medina, you should see the Kasbah with its thick walls and go to the ethnographical museum to learn about how the city grew. Having a drink or snacks on top of the building offers lovely views and reminds you of how secure this amazing city feels. We arrive in Chefchaouen, offering you a good night’s stay so you can easily start your next activity in Morocco.

Day 4: Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Meknes → Fes

After finishing a great breakfast, we depart the peaceful Chefchaouen for another leg of your journey south to Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While surveying the sprawling area close to the large raised plain, you’ll easily notice how enormous the Roman city in ruins was. You will learn remarkable facts about Roman history while looking at Europe’s well-kept arches, grand basilicas and elaborate mosaics at the House of Orpheus and the Documents Maximums.

After getting to know the history of Morocco, your Morocco Tour will next take you to Meknes for a sight of its ramparts, the famed mosque and impressive Bab Mansour gate. There were once so many horses in the surrounding area that 12,000 could be grazed together which made the city essential to Moroccan military history. After a busy morning, you continue to Fes to rest overnight and the opportunity to see and do many things in this city will surely wear you out, allowing for calm and peaceful thoughts at the end of the day.

Day 5: A Guided Tour of Fes

You will explore Fes today, supported by an expert local guide who will share its most special secrets with you. You’ll see unforgettable spots such as Karaouine University, the Medrassa Bouanania and the colorful, lively souks, each full of interesting things to see and smell. At Idriss II Corner, you’re offered breathtaking panoramic views and once you’re done, you can stroll over to Bab Boujloud, another site recognized by UNESCO, admire the ancient city walls and check out the architectural wonders of Attarine School, Norte Tower, Annajarin and Dar Bathaa.

In addition, you can see leather being made at the tanneries and observe how ceramics are produced, getting a clear view of local craftsmanship. Following your guided Morocco tour, the palace and old Jewish quarter will be the first places you’ll visit before you try traditional Moroccan food for lunch. Trip To Morocco tours has carefully arranged a comprehensive tour of Fes, to be led by an expert guide. This will surely be an unforgettable part of your 12 days Morocco Tour. After the tour, you will relax in your hotel or Riad, having explored the town.

Day 6: Fes → Ifrane → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Merzouga

During this part of your 12 days Morocco Tour, we change scenery as we go from Fes and head towards the Sahara, seeing many different surroundings and cultures. After exploring Fes, we’ll drive via Ifrane, named ‘Moroccan Switzerland’ for its mountain-town feel and spectacular views from 1665 meters above sea level. Along the way, you’ll find the Brotherhood University, an English medium college that began in 1997.

After that, we’ll enjoy our packed lunches in the picturesque Berber village of Zaida and travel further to Midelt which sits on the eastern side of the High Atlas Mountains. After heading through even more fascinating Berber villages and green palm groves, most notably at Jbel Ayachi (3747m), we reach the region of the Blue Men. The road smoothly heads down into the pre-Saharan area, with stops in Errachidia and Erfoud, recognized for its pottery and for having fossilized quarries that go back 350 million years. And finally, you will see the impressive red dunes of Erg Chebbi and watch the huge, strange-looking Merzouga rises vanish into the horizon as you unwind in your night’s accommodation. This day begins your special desert adventure in your 12 days visit to Morocco.

Day 7: Explore Merzouga Region (Sahara Desert)

With each person filled with a delicious breakfast, you will head into the desert part of your 12 days tour at 10 am. Navigating the wide Merzouga desert and admiring the Erg Chebbi dunes is made easy as you travel in a roomy 4×4 car. Through this trip, you’ll get to understand the remarkable culture of Khamliya, whose music is renowned for Gnawa, a genre influenced by African, Berber and Arabic Traditions.

Then, you will understand how nomadic families live by joining them and drinking their authentic nomad’s tea, a sign of friendship from them. You’ll later stop at one of the friendly restaurants that are set in the beautiful desert. In the afternoon, you have the choice to spare or take it easy: maybe enjoy a walk through the desert or enjoy something more daring with an ATV-quad ride. An hour and a half before sunset, you will ride on a camel to the desert area where you’ll spend the night. Set right next to the famous Erg Chebbi dunes, this camp gives visitors a unique overnight experience and offers great chances to see stars. It puts you right in the desert and remains a highlight you’ll always remember from your trip to Morocco.

Day 8: Sahara Desert → Rissani → Todra Valley → Todgha Gorges

On the first day of our 12 days trip, we depart from Rissani, founded by Moulay Ali Chrif, the respected founder of the Alaouite dynasty in the late 16th century. Long ago, this site forms part of the Tafilalet kingdom and acted as a key area where traders from north and south of Morocco met for caravans. Right now, Rissani is full of activity because it’s a commercial center for the region.

Following this, we head roughly 127 km south from the central High Atlas Mountains to review the impressive Todgha Gorges. Its amazing features include huge canyons, undeveloped plateaus and a sequence of striking, eroded peaks sculpted by many generations. Here, you find mountains that are between 2500 and 4068m tall such as Jbel Saghro and Jbel Mgoun and the region is also occupied by the Berber people, who help to shape the area’s culture. Moreover, you can go trekking in these impressive canyons to take in both the landscape and the area’s fascinating history, thanks to Todra Valley. We’ll spend a night in this region to appreciate both the variety in its geography and its long history.

Day 9: Todra Valley → Dades Valley and Gorges → Skoura Palm Oasis

Following our visit to the amazing Todgha Gorges, the next part of our Moroccan trip will take us through the popular Dades Gorge, alongside the winding Tisdrin road. Along the length of the Road of One Thousand Kasbahs, explorers can see many ancient kasbahs remain, both decorated and well restored or as silent ruins full of history.

We go through the Valley of Roses as well, where you’ll admire fields of Alfalfa and charming gardens of olive trees, figs and vines. You might be familiar with this area for having delicious Damask roses which residents gather to make excellent soaps, perfumes and creams. An annual festival is arranged at the end of April to pay tribute to this famous rose harvest. After that, we will stop at the famous Amridil Kasbah which is located in the green Skoura oasis. After the end of the day, we’ll settle in for a peaceful night in the beautiful Skoura Palm Grove which seems just as peaceful as the rest of the Moroccan desert. The second part of your 12 days tour is known for spectacular scenery and inside looks at Moroccan culture.

Day 10: Skoura Palm Oasis → Ouarzazate → Ait Benhaddou → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

Following your morning adventure in Skoura Palm Oasis, your small group tour heads by car to Ouarzazate, described as Africa’s Hollywood or the Gateway to the Desert. On the south side of a plateau, barely two hundred kilometers away from the High Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate is mainly home to Berber people who have built kasbahs and a number of facilities. Among these is the Taourirt Kasbah, built in the 17th century which you can view from outside, taking in its strong historical character.

Frequent appearances of Ouarzazate in big film productions have led to its name being called “Hollywood of Africa.” After our 12 days Morocco Tour itinerary is complete, we head about 30km further to Aït Benhaddou which played a major role in linking Marrakech and the Sahara Desert as a historic fortress built in the 11th century. Example of Kasbah architecture can be seen at Aït Benhaddou, built into the rock beside the Ounila River, but some of its oldest structures are weathered by rain and wind.

Although most of the village’s inhabitants now live on the other side, some families still live courageously in the Kasbah. Starting in 1987, Aït Benhaddou has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it has recently become known for film locations in movies such as Gladiator (2000), Kundun (1997) and Alexander (2004). Exploring the prominent site behind us, we made our way through the amazing Atlas Mountains, stopping several times at the scenic passes before settling in Marrakech which the Berber people refer to as the ‘Homeland of God.’ For your first night, enjoy the city of Marrakech, thinking ahead to the final days of your exploration in Morocco.

Day 11: Marrakech City Tour

A guide from Trip To Morocco will collect you from your hotel or riad at about 9:30 or 10 am and together you’ll enjoy an exciting walking tour through bustling Marrakesh’s old medina, where many souks are still alive. At Bahia Palace, a landscaped gem with lovely orange blossoms in its gardens, you’ll glance at the entertaining rooms, spaces for practicing culture and relax in the remodeled bathhouse.

Also, you’ll visit the Marrakech Museum, found in another palace and you’ll enjoy looking at a collection of Moroccan art and sculptures. Before we move on, we’ll visit the Koutoubia Mosque, whose minaret impressed architects everywhere and inspired La Giralda of Seville as well as other towers. You will then visit the Secret Garden and go to the Madrasa Ben Youssef, then spend time wandering the charming maze of the medina’s alleys before finishing at Djemaa el Fna square. The remainder of the day is available to you so you can take in the one-of-a-kind sights and shopping experiences from the small artisan studios to the exciting souks.

By late afternoon, around 4 or 5 pm, we will arrive at your hotel, but if you want something extraordinary, go straight to Djemaa el Fna square to eat in its streets, watch performances by storytellers and musicians and enjoy an amazing dinner, making your experience on the 12 days Morocco Tour truly memorable.
