Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Tinzert via Imi Oughlad (4 Hours Hike)

The journey begins at 9:00 AM from Marrakech with your expert local guide, travelling to Imi Oughlad (1,400m). Once you’ve arrived you’ll meet your mule handlers before heading out for your first trek through Ouirgane National Park’s picturesque landscapes. You take the trail through the lush greenery, the ancient juniper forest and the charming Berber villages. You trek for 4 hours and when you arrive to the peaceful village of Tinzert, you’ll stay one night in a traditional Berber guesthouse.

Day 2: Tinzert to Ait Aissa in Azzaden Valley (6 Hours Hike)

The journey begins at 9:00 AM from Marrakech with your expert local guide, travelling to Imi Oughlad (1,400m). Once you’ve arrived you’ll meet your mule handlers before heading out for your first trek through Ouirgane National Park’s picturesque landscapes. You take the trail through the lush greenery, the ancient juniper forest and the charming Berber villages. You trek for 4 hours and when you arrive to the peaceful village of Tinzert, you’ll stay one night in a traditional Berber guesthouse.

Day 3: Explore the Sahara Desert

Do not skip breakfast accompanied by a 4 hours 4 x 4 dune drive to discover the Merzouga area. Spend time with some nomadic people and learn about their life practices during the tea time. It is suggested to take a break in the village of Khamliya to try to listen to the roots of Gnawa music as a specially significant part of the culture.
Make the rest of the day yours, either, laze around the beach, do sand boarding or do quad biking in the sand dunes. In the evening, you can again ride a camel to watch sunset before going back to the desert camp. You may have dinner, music, as well as look at the stars, embrace the calmness of the desert.

Day 3: Ait Aissa to Imlil via Tizi-n-Mzik (5 Hours Hike)

The finish is a scenic climb to Tizi-n-Mzik pass (2,489m) that is just spectacularly scenic, with breathtaking views over the surrounding valleys. Here you will go down into the famous Imlil Valley, the well known entrance to Mount Toubkal. Arriving back in the evening in Marrakech, you will have a well deserved lunch in Imlil prior to transfer back.

What is the best time to trek in the Atlas Mountains?

The best season is spring (April–May), spring if the weather is mild and landscapes are lush. Snow can be cold winters, and hot summers.

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes! Daily hiking is on the moderate side and is also suitable for beginners. Mule rides are on hand to make the journey easier if necessary.

How physically demanding is this 3-day trek?

It is a 4 – 6 hour a day walk, moderate level. There are some steep, that break, that you can travel at pace with the breaks in place.

Do I need special hiking equipment?

Basic hiking gear like sturdy boots, layered clothing, and sun protection is recommended. Equipment rental is available in Ouirgane for those who need it.

Will I have access to Wi-Fi or phone service?

Phone service is rare in guesthouses but most have almost no phone service for villages. You will be expecting to do a digital detox and enjoy nature at the same time.

What should I pack for this trek?

Hiking boots, layered clothing, sunscreen, water, a backpack are all considered essentials. Well, a camera would be great for capturing such stunning views.

Can I extend my trek beyond three days?

Yes! Depending on what you like, you can extend your adventure to Mount Toubkal or even to some nearby villages. It is possible to have longer treks with guides.

What kind of food is provided on the trek?

You will get involved in Moroccan meals such as tajines, couscous, fresh bread and tea. The package includes all meals.

How do I get to the starting point of the trek?

Your trek starts at Imi Oughlad and you’ll be picked up Marrakech for the 2.5 hour trip. The package, in addition, includes round trip transport.

Is travel insurance required for this trek?

However, travel insurance is not compulsory but very recommended for medical emergencies, cancellations or unforeseen events.
