Beginning with a departure from Marrakech in the morning, towards Imlil a small mountain village, that is the starting point to many treks. Upon your arrival you will meet your guide and the mule team and then begin heading towards Tizi n’ Tamaterte Pass (2279m). She explained that the trail boasts breathtaking views of Imlil Valley and the neighborhood high rises. After a short break to admire the scenery you will continue on the Imnane Valley, going through chesnut and cherry orchards. By afternoon you will arrive to the remote Berber village of Tacheddirt with its traditional guesthouse and a warm meal under the starry sky.
Following breakfast you will spend 6 hours trekking through the wild landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains. The climb begins early in the day, to Tizi n’Tacheddirt pass, to take in the sweeping views of the valleys below. Spend a short break and get ready for a descent down rocky terrain to the peaceful spot of Laabbassen village and enjoy lunch. You continue on your way through country villages, small and picturesque, that are bathed in serenity. You’ll arrive in Timichi, a lovely Berber settlement, late afternoon, then spend the night in a traditional guest house there.
A scenic trek down the Ourika Valley, following the flow of a river your last day begins. In the Berber village of Tiourdiou, Anfli and Tadrart you will pass by a series of authentic Berber villages along the way. The journey is to the beautiful village of Setti Fadma known for its cascading waterfalls. You will enjoy a well deserved lunch before meeting the transport provider for your journey back to Marrakech. By late afternoon you’ll arrive back in the city after an unbelievable three days in the Atlas Mountains, remembering your trek with unforgettable memories.

Hikin is at its most pleasant during spring, murch to maje (march to may) and autumn, sampoo to sampoo (septemeber to novelmeber) when temperatures are tsml, and the landscapes tsml green. The heat of summer can be too much to enjoy other than early morning or late evening hikes that are more comfortable for climbing, or the snow of winter can make hiking a difficult, if not dangerous, trek. The trek, however, is open all year round with varying landscape in each season.
Yes! This trek is of an average hiking distance of 4-6 hours per day and therefore, it is suitable for beginners. There are some really steep ascents on some sections but obviously it’s a pace that is adjusted which is dependant on who is in whose group. They can also be used as mules to assist those who require more assistance.
Tizi Ntachedirt Pass is especially dense uphill sections (not a chance to jump over peddles) and with this being a mod… Most people in decent physical condition can complete it, however, but with proper pacing and breaks. If you have any concerns, it is recommended that you do some short hikes before to your trip.
This trek is highly recommended and yes, a licensed local guide is provided. They make sure you are safe, have you on the best route and they give you knowledge on Berber culture. First time visitors are often a little tricky, guides help on the trails to avoid unnecessary detours or difficult paths.
Pack hiking boots, layered clothing, small backpack, sun protection, hat and sunglasses. In addition, in winter warm clothing such as gloves and thermal wear is required. On the trek, a camera and a refillable water bottle are also useful.
Most mountain villages don’t have Wi-Fi and phone service is still scarce in some places. You can expect to go offline and get into the nature. Signal reception may be available in some guesthouses but better be prepared for a digital detox.
Yes! In Imlil, with the help of your guide, you can indeed rent hiking gear including trekking poles, warm clothing, and crampons. The choice to rent is a convenient and if you don’t want to carry heavy equipment from home.
The meals are traditional Moroccan including tajines, couscous, fresh bread and mint tea. Bread, jam, and tea is breakfast, lunch and dinner are robust Moroccan dishes. Upon request we do cater for vegetarian and special dietary requirements.
Travel insurance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended for safety. The coverage should include medical emergencies, trip cancellations, accidents and so on. Just as trekking in the remote areas involves some risks, it is always better to be prepared.
One of the benefits of hiring your own guide is that your trek package will also include a round trip transfer between Marrakech and Imlil in an air conditioned vehicle. Lead time from Marrakech to Imlil is about 1.5 hrs and is a manageable distance to begin your adventure.
