Private 2-Day tour from Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Fint Oasis

08:00Pickup in Marrakech

Your driver guide collects you from your hotel or riad while the city is still half asleep, and takes the road southeast. Within forty minutes the plain is behind you and the first ridges of the High Atlas fill the windscreen.

09:45Tizi n’Tichka, 2,260 metres

The road climbs past walnut terraces and stone villages before it breaks above the treeline at the highest pass in the country open to traffic. We stop where the view actually earns it rather than at the first row of souvenir stalls. Bring something warm for the ten minutes you spend outside the car, because the wind up here does not care what season it is.

11:00Telouet and the Glaoui kasbah

Telouet was the seat of Thami El Glaoui, the pasha who ran the south until 1956 and lived like a king while he did it. From outside, the kasbah is sliding back into the hillside. The rooms that survive are another matter: zellige laid to the ceiling, carved plaster, painted cedar, all of it left exactly where the family walked out. Access has been partly restricted since the 2023 earthquake, so your driver checks what is open before you pay the entrance at the door.

12:15The Ounila Valley back road

Rather than rejoining the main highway, you drop into the Ounila and follow the riverbed south. Red earth hamlets, barley terraces, granaries cut into the cliff face, and perhaps three other cars in an hour. It costs about forty minutes against the tarmac route and it is usually the stretch people talk about at dinner.

13:30Aït Ben Haddou, with a village guide

The Ounila road delivers you at the back of the ksar, which is the right way to arrive. A local guide from the village walks you up through the alleys and stairways to the granary at the top, where the whole valley opens out. Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones were all shot on these walls, and the guide will point out exactly where without making the whole visit about films.

15:30Ouarzazate, lunch and film country

Half an hour east for a late lunch in the town Morocco built its film industry around. If the day has run to time, Atlas Film Studios is a short detour and worth it for anyone who likes seeing how the trick is done. If you would rather push on to the oasis, we push on.

17:00Into Fint Oasis

The last fifteen kilometres leave the tarmac and drop into the canyon. One minute it is grey stone and nothing, the next there are palms, running water and gardens laid out in strips. You walk the paths between the plots in the last hour of light, when the rock walls go from ochre to rust.

07:30Morning walk in the palms

A guided hour along the irrigation channels while the canyon is still cool. Families are out in their plots at this time, water is being turned from one garden into the next, and you get a clear look at how an oasis actually works rather than how it photographs.

09:00Breakfast on the terrace

Bread, oil, honey, eggs if you want them, and as much mint tea as you can drink. No rush to be anywhere.

10:30Skoura and Kasbah Amridil

North into the Skoura palm grove, where something like seven hundred kasbahs sit among the trees in every state from lived in to collapsed. Amridil is the one still standing properly, and its courtyard, oil press and granary explain how these houses were meant to run.

12:30Ouarzazate and the Taourirt Kasbah

The Glaoui family’s other stronghold, right on the edge of town, restored enough to walk through and still confusing enough to enjoy getting lost in. Lunch afterwards in Ouarzazate, at your own pace.

15:00Back over the Atlas

The Tizi n’Tichka a second time, in afternoon light that hits the northern slopes completely differently. Argan and saffron stops on request, and a last coffee before the descent.
